In the movie, As Good As It Gets, Simon Bishop gets viciously beaten by a
group of opportunistic thieves. This necessitates that he spend time in the hospital. The
problem arises of what to do with Simon's dog. It is decided that the dog be put into the
care of Simon's bigoted neighbor, Melvin Udall, who not only hates Simon and his dog,
but who also suffers from compulsive-obsessive behavior. The dog eventually wins
Melvin's heart, setting up the heart-wrenching scene in which Simon, newly released
from the hospital, comes to collect his dog. Simon calls his dog's name. The dog doesn't
come to him. The more he calls, the more confused the dog becomes, eventually running
to hide behind Melvin, which crushes Simon. The reason for the dog's preference of
Melvin, it is revealed, is that Melvin always has treats in his pocket.
That scene gives us a great visualization of God's calling to Israel. The more God called, the more Israel backed away, lured by the "treats" of the Baals and idols.
