Joshua's stirring words, As for...

Joshua's stirring words, "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord," also call us to obedient discipleship today. We are to examine our own relationships with God and to choose which of the many available "deities" we will serve. Will it be our bank account, vocation, sports team, or home?
Joshua urges the Israelites to be fruitful for the God who brought them out of slavery in Egypt and who protected and provided for them during their journey to the promised land. God requires that we, too, commit ourselves to freeing and protecting those who live in slavery and suffer oppression today.
Whatever our life's work may be, it is a fruitful ministry if we are working for God. It's not about obeying the letter of the law, but about our commitment, our attitude, our actions, and about how we treat others. Sometimes we who call ourselves Christians don't act like it. Others have expectations of those who call themselves Christian. When our attitudes and actions seem worse than those of non-Christians, people don't think much of the Christian faith.
