Johnny was adopted into a family of two brothers and one sister, of whom he was the youngest. The adoptive parents were devout Christians who brought their children up "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). As their biological children grew and went on to college, it was a deep disappointment to the parents that they did not continue in the faith and church. When they were home at vacation time, they indicated that they had outgrown their upbringing; they wouldn't accompany their parents and Johnny to church.
However, the adopted son continued in the church when he reached adulthood. He became active in all areas of worship and administration. Finally he decided to go to seminary, training to be ordained in the Christian ministry. He explained to his parents that it was God's call that led him to the ministry. "God chose to call me, and I will do all I can, with God's help, to lead my brothers and sister to Christ," he promised.
