I am glad a few radio stations are observing the "12 days of Christmas" and continuing to play carols until January 6. This has only been true for the last few years. To the secular world, the Christmas season is the season of shopping and preparation beginning before Thanksgiving and ending Christmas Day. By the day after Christmas, only discarded wrapping paper remains and few carols may be heard. We are left with only the bills, not the joy.
For the church, the Christmas season begins with Christmas Day and continues until Epiphany, January 6. The joy of the Lord's coming is not just anticipated, it is fully celebrated. So, the words of Jeremiah, "Sing aloud with gladness," are a continuing reminder that our season for joy continues. Savor the words of the prophet: "ransomed ... rejoice ... be merry." We have the opportunity to make known to the world that the joy continues as we extend our celebration, both by our formal worship, and our attitude of a continuing Christmas spirit in our lives.
