Humility with regard to our understanding of God is always in order. Surely nothing can be as foolhardy as theological arrogance. For just as soon as we feel as though we have an extra special understanding, God confounds us. And for that we can thank God.
The pattern of a minister in Lowell, Massachusetts, from another day is worthy of our emulation. It was his custom to preach once a year on the latest discoveries and theories in astronomy. Someone asked him, "What possible use can such a sermon have for people who spend long hours weaving cotton cloth in a textile mill?" "No use whatever," said the preacher, "but it greatly enlarges my idea of God." Asked Roger Hazelton, "Have we anything better to give our people than that?"
"We can hardly guess at what is on earth, and what is at hand we find with labor; but who has traced out what is in the heavens?" Translation: Proceed theologically with caution --and without swelled headedness.
