Good works are the fruit...

Good works are the fruit of salvation. The concluding sentence of the post-communion prayer in the Anglican Church puts Paul's thought (chapter 2, verse 10) well, "Assist us with thy grace ... and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in." This is a good summation of the Pauline idea of salvation through faith.
Another good thought in the text is verse 4, says J. B. Phillips. A god "who is rich in mercy" was truly good news to the ancient world which was so full of fear.
Putting these two thoughts together, John Newton's hymn, "Amazing Grace," sums up our text well.
