George and Ruth knew that...

George and Ruth knew that their granddaughter, Shelly, desperately wanted to go to a very expensive, private church college. Her parents were separated and both in financial crises. Both George and Ruth took on second jobs in their years just before retirement to help their granddaughter through school. These were rough years. George developed heart problems due to higher stress. Ruth did all the "number crunching" she could as the couple lived on cheap box dinners (which didn't help George's bad heart condition). Finally, their granddaughter graduated and got a nice job with a good income. Shelly met a man at the college whom she married and they have two nice kids.
In order for this young family to emerge, George and Ruth emptied themselves and their finances for their granddaughter. They didn't have to do this. They did it out of love. Paul in Philippians cites a credo from Isaiah 52 of self-emptying love. This is what Paul uplifts as the model of Christ and Christians during Lent.
