Everyone knew Gary. He drove the newest and biggest car, had the most powerful tractor and combine, and lived in the biggest house, and his kids had the most expensive toys. It was generally assumed, in that small rural community, that Gary and his family were living off the proceeds from a large estate -- farming certainly wasn't that profitable. Indeed, Gary encouraged that view. He loved to be the center of attention.
