Edward White tells of growing up in Boston as an ardent Boston Red Sox fan, and an even more ardent Boston Celtics fan. The former attachment led to frustration, whereas the latter loyalty led to great joy. The Red Sox baseball team was loaded with individual stars. On paper you would wonder how they could ever lose. But they seldom won the championship. Their hitters tended to swing for the fences, more concerned about their own individual records than
sacrificing their own glory for the sake of the whole team. As a result, they lost many close games that they might otherwise have won.
The Celtics basketball team, on the other hand, approached things from an entirely different point of view. They had good players, yet when the statistics were released at the end of the season each year they did not have stars at the top of the list of individual scorers. What they did have was a beautifully balanced team. Players were willing to pass to the open teammate and not think just of personal records. Consequently, the Celtics won the National Basketball Association championship no less than 11 out of 13 years.
"And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place (Acts 2:1)." Surely, one of the clues to the enormous spiritual energy of the apostolic church was its togetherness in waiting for the power of the Holy Spirit.
