Clara Barton exemplified in a very physical, tangible way what Jesus meant when he said, "Do as I have done in showing your love for one another." His command and invitation to love was embodied in the work of Clara Barton, who became known during the Civil War as the "Angel of the Battlefield." Tirelessly during the war, she nursed the sick and injured, both behind the lines and also on the front lines, washing more than their feet and tending to conditions more serious than dirt on the body. Diminutive in stature, she stood tall among those she helped, often at peril to her own life. When the war was over, her service continued as she founded the American Red Cross, which has continued the tradition of unconditional loving service (for which "foot-washing" is a metaphor) for those in need.
