As I served the sacrament of our Lord's Supper, I looked at the uplifted hands around the table and then to the faces of the people seeking God's grace.
I saw Bob and Harriett, both divorcees, now in their second marriage. I saw Mickey, an alcoholic, who hasn't touched a drop in six years. Harvey who once served time in prison. Jamie, previously the victim of a nervous breakdown. And I saw Jesus who stood behind each one saying, "I've given you a second chance."
The gospel of the second chance. Not license for irresponsibility or an invitation to quickly repent and go back to business as usual but a chance to participate in the very nature of God. God who loves us enough to forgive us, enough to turn a page in our lives so we can write a new chapter.
Peter indicated the men of Israel for crucifying Jesus, challenged them to repent, and promised them "times of refreshing that come from the presence of the Lord." (vs. 19) He gave them a second chance Peter had watched Jesus with the sinners and had gotten the message.
I've messed up a lot of things in my life, have had many second chances, and I thank God for every one of them.
