Bostonian Tom White is the head of the J. F. White Contracting Co., which built much of the Boston subway system, the Charles River Dam, Foxboro Stadium, and much more. Since 1945, when he took over management from his father, he has built the company into an enterprise worth some $100 million dollars. He belonged to a half dozen private clubs and was JFK's chief fundraiser in New England. But about 20 years ago he decided to give everything away. Over the years, he has given away all but about $8 million of his funds and, over the next two years, plans to reduce his net worth further to about $2.5 million. Then he plans to stop and live off the interest. He estimates that he has given to about 130 different charities. He is a devout Roman Catholic who goes to church every morning and says, "I get tremendous pleasure out of giving. I do what I love, helping people with my money."
In today's Epistle, Saint Paul encourages the Christians at Corinth, as well as us, to grow in the grace of sacrificial giving. He cites the Macedonians as a noble example. And he shows that it is the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ that inspires us to use our money to God's glory and the well-being of others.
