As any hiker knows, an excellent backpack is a wonderful thing. A great backpack allows a relatively healthy person to carry 30 to 35 percent of her body weight over long distances, even up and down mountain trails, with minimal difficulty. If the backpack is properly adjusted, the backpacker carries the weight primarily with her legs, and her back, legs and feet are not damaged. But imagine a 125-pound woman trying to carry 30 to 35 percent of her weight (40 pounds) in her arms, or over her head, or in a knapsack slung over one shoulder.
