As any hiker knows, an excellent backpack is a wonderful thing. A great backpack allows a relatively healthy person to carry 30 to 35 percent of her body weight over long distances, even up and down mountain trails, with minimal difficulty. If the backpack is properly adjusted, the backpacker carries the weight primarily with her legs, and her back, legs and feet are not damaged. But imagine a 125-pound woman trying to carry 30 to 35 percent of her weight (40 pounds) in her arms, or over her head, or in a knapsack slung over one shoulder. Airport ticket lines are filled with people who want to check their luggage, weighing much less than 40 pounds, so that they will not have to lumber awkwardly and uncomfortably down the long walkways to their plane carrying their bags. At laundromats and grocery stores, in front yards and shopping malls, people struggle with their bulky loads. Their goods are carried inefficiently, in bags or baskets, and their loads seem unwieldy. Carrying a heavy load in a well-designed backpack allows an individual to carry more than she could otherwise carry. And such a backpack allows her to carry it comfortably, with her hands freed to take care of other necessities. Yes, an excellent backpack is a wonderful thing! -- Spencer
