An adult education group was meeting with the pastor to prepare themselves for
reception into local church membership. They were studying all the usual topics: the
Bible, the history of the denomination and that particular faith community, the nature of
the church, and the ministry of the people. The Sunday came for them to discuss baptism
and holy communion.
The pastor asked them to reflect on what holy communion was about and what it meant to them. Folks had a hard time as they tried to describe what exactly they experienced when they went forward for communion (as it was practiced in that particular church). All kinds of answers, some theologically correct and some less so, were offered. Finally, a woman about 75 years old spoke up: "I've been receiving communion for my whole life, and all I know is this: I go up empty, and I come back full."
