In 1993 Pope John Paul II issued an encyclical called "Veritatis Splendor" (Splendor of the Truth). And in that statement the pope condemned the practice of those who make their consciences the highest authority in moral decision-making. And the pope went on to say that just because many believers do not follow the teaching of the church on an issue, that does not make the teaching wrong. Morality is not determined by a show of hands. And so when it comes to moral decisions, the majority is not always right. There is a limit to God's patience.
