Working hands are busy hands
Children's sermon
Object:
work gloves
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some gloves this morning. I'd like
to see how many kinds of gloves we can name together this morning. What
kind of gloves are these? (Put them on and let them respond.) These are
work gloves. What kinds of work do you think I could do in these gloves?
(Let them respond.) I could work in the garden. I could work in the yard
with bushes and trees. I could clean the basement or the garage. Let's
name another kind of glove. (Let them name another kind of glove. It might
be one of the following gloves.) There are surgeon's gloves. What's a
surgeon? (Let them respond.) A surgeon is a doctor who operates on people.
The gloves a surgeon wears are very thins. They have to be tight and thin
so a surgeon can feel what he or she is doing. Then there are regular
rubber gloves. Those are the kind people wear to do cleaning. What are
some things people clean with rubber gloves on? (Let them respond.) They
clean sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, windows, mirrors, walls, floors and
ceilings. Those are a lot of things to clean. I'd be awfully tired if I cleaned
all that. There are another kind of gloves some people wear when they
exercise. These gloves don't have fingers in them. They protect the
person's wrists and help them grip the exercise equipment.
Why do people wear gloves? (Let them respond.) They wear gloves to protect their hands from dirt and prickly weeds, or from cleaning soap that stings your hands. Surgeons wear them to keep germs from passing from the surgeon to the patient or from the patient to the surgeon.
Our lesson today is about protection. But it is not protection from germs, dirt or soap. It is protection from idleness. Do you know what idleness is? (Let them respond.) Idleness means doing nothing. The letter we read today warned Jesus' helpers and friends to keep busy doing work. The letter said that it is not good to sit around doing nothing. Some of the people were lazy and were sitting around doing nothing. People need to work. Gloves protect our hands. Work protects us from getting into trouble from having nothing to do. When you run out of things to do, get out a pair of gloves and get to work! 52
