When do you pray?
Children's sermon
Object:
a book of children's prayers
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have said a
prayer sometime this past week? (Let them answer.) How many of
you pray before you go to bed at night? (Let them answer.) How
many of you pray before you eat a meal? (Let them answer.) How
many of you pray at some other time during the day? (Let them
answer.) Most of us pray often, don't we? Most of us pray before
we go to bed and before we eat. You may not know that you can
also pray at any time of the day that you wish. When you pray you
talk with God. Prayer is a wonderful thing. It lets you tell God
what you are thinking. It lets you tell God what you are thankful
for. It lets you tell God what is troubling you. Many people pray
to God about many things. Our lesson this morning tells us that
Jesus prayed often to God. Prayer was very important to Jesus.
I brought a book of prayers with me this morning that are especially for children. Maybe some of you have a book of prayers like this one. I brought it because it reminds me that children need prayer in their life, just like adults need prayers. We pray often in church. Sometimes those prayers may seem long to you. Sometimes you may not understand what is happening in those prayers. This week, remember that when you pray you are talking with God. You can talk with God whenever you want. It doesn't have to be just at bedtime or at mealtime. I'd like to read you one prayer from my book. I hope that it will give you some ideas about how to pray to God sometime this week. (Either read one of the prayers from your book, or conclude with the following prayer.) Dear God, thank you for my life. Help me this week to be the child you want me to be. Help me to love persons in my family. Help me to love others around me. Watch over me as I play with my friends. Help me to help others find your kingdom. Amen.
Thank you for coming this morning. Remember to say a prayer to God sometime this week. When you do, you are talking with God.
