Time to Prepare!
Children's sermon
Object:
a strand of Christmas tree lights (plugged in)
The Point: The decorations of Christmas remind us to make room for Jesus in our lives
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys and thank you for sharing this time with me. When you see lights like these around doors and windows, along the eves of houses, and in trees, what do you think of? (show the Christmas lights)
It certainly means that Christmas is getting near. It means that it is time to prepare to celebrate the birth of God’s Son, Jesus. Now is the time to prepare our lives so that Jesus may find a home in our hearts, in our lives.
In our Bible reading today Luke tells us about John the Baptist. John brought a message from God. John lived in the wilderness. He ate locus and wild honey. His clothes were made of camel’s hair. You could say that John was like these Christmas lights. He called people to prepare their lives to receive the Savior of God, Jesus.
Prepare means “to get ready.” In the midst of all the excitement and fun of this season, remember we are to get our lives ready to welcome Jesus.
Luke quotes the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.”
John wanted people then and you and me today to prepare by making it easy for Jesus to fill our lives with his love and joy. When you pray every day, when you worship faithfully, when you forgive and have mercy for others, when you read your Bible or listen to a Bible story, you are preparing your life for Jesus.
As we prepare the way for Jesus Luke gives us this promise: “And all humankind will see God’s salvation.” Enjoy the lights of Christmas, but even more importantly may they call you to prepare, to make room for Jesus in your life.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, you call us to prepare for your coming into our hearts and lives. Empower our faith and strengthen us in our preparation for your presence. Give us the gift of your Holy Spirit that we may rejoice in your birth and look forward to your coming again. Lord Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
