Shame, shame
Children's sermon
Object:
a chair turned around, facing a corner
The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." (v.
11)
Good morning, boys and girls. When I came to church this morning I saw something different up here in front. Do any of you see something strange? (let them answer) That's right, this chair. It would be pretty hard to sit on it the way it is facing, don't you think? Why would the chair be facing the corner instead of facing this way? (let them answer) Have you ever seen a chair in the corner? (let them answer) You have and it was because someone misbehaved and had to sit facing the other way in a corner.
I hope no one here has ever had to sit on a chair in the corner. The person that sits in the corner broke the rules, didn't they? Has anyone here ever broken the rules and had to sit in a chair in the corner? (let them answer)
The reason I bring this up is because sometimes we do things that bring us shame. Do you know what shame means? (let them answer) The Bible uses the word "shame" and it is not a good word. When we are in shame, we do not feel very good. We kind of hang our heads down and look at our feet. We lose our privilege to talk. We may not be able to eat with our classmates but instead have to sit in the corner and eat our food. I don't think any of us want to be shamed.
The Bible says this about shame, "No one who believes in him [Jesus] will be put to shame." Isn't that wonderful? If you believe in Jesus by loving him and following his teachings, he will never let you be shamed. There are no chairs in heaven facing the corner. The Bible teaches us that we cannot say the word Jesus, and do something wrong.
Do you believe in Jesus with all of your heart? (let them answer) Do you use the name of Jesus to pray, sing songs of praise, and to show others your great love for Jesus? (let them answer) I am sure that you do and because you do believe and use the name of Jesus, neither God nor any other person who walks on this earth, will ever shame you. Amen.
