For it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (v. 13)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about baking. How many of you have helped someone bake before? Maybe a cake or cookies or bread? (allow answers) What did you help bake? (allow answers) When we bake, we use a lot of ingredients. Can any of you tell me what kind of ingredients you might use to bake? (allow answers) Flour, sugar, baking mix, eggs, oil -- there are lots of things that we have to mix together so that we can have foods like bread or cake. Each ingredient that we put in our mixture does a specific job. Flour makes our bread or cookies fluffier. Eggs make it stick together and not crumble. Sugar makes it sweet. Salt and vanilla make it taste better and there is one ingredient that is very important in a lot of recipes. That ingredient is baking soda.
How many of you have seen someone use baking soda before? (allow answers) Baking soda is used in a lot of baking because it does something that is very important. It makes food rise. If you didn't put baking soda in your cookies or biscuits, your food would be flat and thin. Baking soda lets it rise so that biscuits can be tall and fluffy and so that cookies can be big and soft. We only use a tiny bit of baking soda in a recipe but it makes a big difference!
Baking soda is at work in our baked goods, enabling them to be fluffy and delicious. In a way, this is like the Holy Spirit working in us. We just need a little bit of the Spirit -- a little bit of God's grace. Suddenly, we are doing good things. We are working for God's glory.
In every good thing we do, the Holy Spirit is at work in us. It is with us when we do something kind for a stranger. It is with us when we help our families at home. It is with us when we put money in the offering plate or volunteer to help organizations in our community. The Holy Spirit is like the baking soda of our lives. It lets us rise to the occasion and help others with love and joy.
Next time you help someone bake, remember that. Remember that baking soda, even though it's a tiny part of the recipe, plays a big role in the finished product. Remember that the Holy Spirit is the baking soda inside each and every one of us, helping us do good things for the glory of God. Amen.
