The problem with pride (Activity)
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Being humble does not come naturally.
Our fallen nature wants to claim credit and exalt itself for
whatever we do. Children need to learn to give God the glory for
whatever we accomplish because He is the one who gives us the
skill or talent which brings us honor and fame.
*Do a role-play of the Gospel story by setting up a table
with enough chairs for everyone. At the head of the table put a
placecard labeled "VIP." At the bottom of the table put a
placecard labeled "LIP."
Explain to the children that VIP stands for "Very Important
Person" and LIP stands for "Least Important Person." Tell them
they can sit in any chair they want and let them seat themselves.
There are four possible outcomes. (1) All seats are
occupied. (2) Nobody sits in either the VIP or LIP seat. (3)
Someone sits in the VIP seat, but nobody sits in the LIP seat.
(4) Someone sits in the LIP seat, but nobody sits in the VIP
seat.
(1) Ask the person sitting in the VIP seat to change places
with the one who sat in the LIP seat and discuss with each how
they felt about the change, relating it to the Gospel.
(2) Discuss why they were unwilling to occupy either seat
and relate this to the Gospel message.
(3) Ask the person who occupied the VIP seat to take the LIP
seat and discuss this in relation to the Gospel message.
(4) Ask the person who occupied the LIP seat to take the VIP
seat and discuss this in relation to the Gospel message.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read Philippians 2:5-11 and discuss its meaning. Then say a
prayer asking God to give us the same attitude that Jesus had.
