Preparing
Children's sermon
Object:
a candle, a bottle of aspirin, a band-aid, an eraser
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. (v. 44)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is the first Sunday in Advent and we are told that we should be prepared. What are we preparing for? (let them answer) That's right, we are preparing for Jesus. Jesus said he is coming again to be with us. But we don't know when he is coming, do we? (let them answer) The answer is, "No, we have no idea when Jesus will come again," but the Bible tells us to be prepared. Jesus tells us that he will come when we don't expect him.
We like to be prepared, don't we? (let them answer) Why do you think I keep this candle around the house in a certain place where I know I will find it if I need it? (let them answer) That's right, I keep this candle near me in case the electricity goes off and I am left in the dark.
Why do I have this bottle of aspirin? (let them answer) That's right, in case I get a headache I need aspirin. Do you know when you are going to get a headache? Of course not, but I have my bottle of aspirin handy in case I get one.
Do any of you ever use a band-aid? (let them answer) Do you carry them around in your pocket? (let them answer) Of course not, you don't know when you are going to have an accident, but you want to have a band-aid at home so you can fix your knee or your elbow when it gets hurt.
How many of you have one of these on your pencil? (let them answer) We like erasers, don't we? (let them answer) Why do we like erasers? (let them answer) Because we can fix mistakes that we make with the other end of the pencil.
If you have candles, aspirin, band-aids, and erasers, you are prepared. You are ready for darkness, headaches, cuts and bruises, and mistakes. That is being prepared.
We need to prepare the same way for the return of Jesus into our lives. We need to be happy that he is coming back. We need to recognize him when he appears. We need to have his love and tell others about him. We are the people of Jesus and so we are always on the lookout for God's Son, Jesus Christ.
Happy Advent. I hope all of you will prepare your lives for the coming of God's Son. Amen.
