The power of touch
Children's sermon
Object:
a bar of soap and a towel
Good morning! Have any of you ever had someone say to you,
"Go wash your hands"? (Let them answer.) So we go to the
washroom, turn on the water and use the soap and then dry our
hands with the towel. Now why should we wash our hands? (Let
them answer.) Because they are dirty. But sometimes our hands
don't look dirty. Should we wash our hands even then? (Let them
answer.) Yes, we might want to wash our hands. Even though our
hands don't look dirty, they may be dirty because of the germs we
pick up from the things we touch. Can someone tell me what
"germs" are? (Let them answer.) We don't want certain germs
because they can make us sick.
Germs are spread by touching. So to keep some germs from
getting to us, it is often wise to wash our hands. The best way
to spread germs is by touch. If we touch things and then wash
our hands, chances are the germs will not spread and make us ill.
But there is something else that is spread by touch. And
this touch will not make us ill, like germs. This kind of touch
brings good. God's Holy Spirit is sometimes spread by touch. In
the Bible we read about how the apostles Peter and John placed
their hands on people to give them the Holy Spirit. I don't know
how this happens because God's Holy Spirit is very much a
mystery. I do know that God uses people to spread the good news
and that the Holy Spirit comes through people.
That is one reason why it is good that we are all here
today. We really need one another. We need people! We need
touching. I like touching and I like being touched. God uses
the touching we have for one another to spread the Holy Spirit.
Just as Peter and John put their hands on people and the Holy
Spirit came to them, so the Holy Spirit is at work among us
today. God is present today and we know that because of each
other. I'm so glad you are here!
Dear Lord: Touch us with your Holy Spirit. Amen.
