Paying homage
Children's sermon
Object:
The Christ child in the manger and the wise men from a creche
Good morning! Today we hear that wonderful story about the wise men from the East who came searching for the king. Who can tell me what happened? (Let them retell the story in their own words.) The story says that when they found the baby Jesus they did something. Do you know what they did? (Let them answer.) It says they "knelt down and paid him homage." What do you suppose that means? Why would they kneel down and what is "homage"?
Let's try to understand why they would kneel down. Why do you suppose they would kneel? (Let them answer.) Kneeling is a sign of respect. They want to honor Jesus ---- even though he is just a very small baby. The way they knew to honor him was the way they would honor any great person ---- they knelt down. I want to put this manger scene here among us. Let's pretend this is the baby Jesus and we are wise men like the real wise men. Let's all kneel facing the baby Jesus. (Do so.)
Now that we are all kneeling let me ask you what "homage" means. We know that the wise men brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But how does one pay "homage"? "Homage" is another word for "respect" or "reverence" or "honor." They knew that Jesus was more than just a baby in a manger, they knew that he was king of the universe. They were overcome with awe and wonder. They were filled with joy. Their knees bent before the Christ child even though they were highly respected and honored persons themselves.
When we kneel to say our prayers or bow our heads, we also "pay homage" to Jesus. We know that Jesus is our Lord and King and we honor him with the way we hold our bodies when talking to him. Let's bow our heads, fold our hands, and pray:
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for being our Lord and King. We come to pay you homage today. Amen.
