Patched by Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
pants needing a hole patched, an iron-on clothes patch, a flat bicycle tire, and a tire patch
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you remember when you were born? (let them answer) Some of you have really good memories. Not many of us can remember that day, but did you know that when we were born we were missing something? (let them answer) God tells us that even when we were just tiny we had a problem and that problem was being separated from God.
Let's see if I can show you what I mean. Here is the tire that belongs on my bicycle, but it has a problem. (push on the tire and show everyone that it is a flat tire) What do you call a tire like this? (let them answer) That's right; a flat tire. I can't ride a bicycle with a flat tire.
Here's another problem. I just bought these pants and I only wore them a couple of times and guess what? I caught my new pants on a nail and put a hole in them. Now what am I going to do? (let them answer) What would your mom or dad do if you tore a hole in your pants? (let them answer) That's right; one of them might patch them with an iron-on patch. And what would they do if you had a hole in your bicycle tire? (let them answer) That's right; one of them might patch it with a tire patch. (show the children the iron-on patch and the tire patch) These two patches will fix my bicycle tire and my pants and they will be as good as new.
This is what Jesus did for us when he died on the cross. He looked at us and saw the hole in us that was caused by our sin and he decided to fix it. When Jesus died on the cross, it was like putting a big patch on us and making us whole again. He made our sin go away. It is fixed and was fixed by Jesus. It isn't something that we did. We didn't fix it; Jesus did. Isn't that wonderful? It is absolutely amazing.
Even when we were babies we needed Jesus. Today you need Jesus and even your grandmother and grandfather need Jesus. It doesn't make any difference how little or big we are, we still need Jesus and the patch he makes on us.
So the next time you see a hole in your bicycle tire or a hole in your pants or skirt and you need them patched, I want you to think about the patch Jesus gives us that makes us whole and able to live forever with God.
