The Parade That Fizzled
Children's sermon
Object:
Green palms
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” (19:38a)
Good morning young people,
Have you ever seen a parade? (children respond)
Have you ever been in a parade? (children respond)
Parades are fun. Parades are festive. Marching bands, music, floats, candy flying everywhere. What excitement! (children share experiences with parades)
Parades happen when someone important comes to town. Like a war hero, a winning athletic team like ____________, a president or governor or parades like on the Fourth of July.
Today, the beginning of Holy Week, we call it Palm Sunday, there were green palms like this (show and wave palms) everywhere. As Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time the multitude of disciples waved palms excitedly. They shouted, sang, and chanted, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!”
The Pharisees told the disciples, “Stop it!”
But the happy palm parade continued with Jesus riding on the colt of a donkey.
The people expected Jesus to come as an earthly king. As an earthly king, Jesus would kick the Romans out and bring freedom and liberty for all. Hooray. Get ’em Jesus!
But Jesus came as a spiritual king! And as a spiritual king, Jesus came into Jerusalem in that palm parade for a different reason. He came to suffer and die in Jerusalem for the sins of the world.
Have you ever expected something to happen to be fun and it turned out bad and sad? (children respond) Is it okay to be happy and excited about something and it doesn't turn out very happy? (children discuss disappointments)
This palm parade began as fun — sparkling. It ended in a fizzle.
The people's earthly king expectations fizzled.
But we know today, Jesus came for a bigger reason. He came as a greater heavenly king. And whoever believes in him is saved today and forever.
Prayer: Jesus you came not as an earthly king but as a heavenly king. Thanks. Amen.
