Our most valuable asset
Children's sermon
Object:
some Monopoly deeds (including Park Place and Boardwalk)
Good evening! It's not often I get to say good evening
because we're usually here in the morning. Why are we all in
church tonight? (Let them answer.) Yes, this is Ash Wednesday,
the first day of Lent. Lent is a time when we spend time
thinking about our sins and what Jesus did for us to take those
sins away. It's a time to think about what is most important in
our life.
How many of you have ever played Monopoly? (Let them
answer.) Here are some deeds from a game of Monopoly. Which of
these properties is the most valuable? (Show the deeds and let
them pick out Park Place and Boardwalk.) Park Place and Boardwalk
are the most valuable. If you have these two and you have hotels
on them, you will get a lot of money when somebody lands on them.
In the game of Monopoly, these two would be called your most
valuable assets.
Now what about in real life? What is your most valuable
asset? What is the most valuable thing you own? (Let them
answer.) Well, I would suggest to you that the most valuable
thing you own is something that was given to you by God. You
didn't do anything to earn it and you didn't pay anything for it.
What do you think it is? (Let them answer.) It's your faith! You
believe in Jesus as your Savior and therefore you are guaranteed
a place in Heaven. God gave you your faith so that you could
believe and be saved. Isn't this your most valuable asset? (Let
them answer.)
Let's thank God for this wonderful gift.
Dear Father in Heaven: Thank You so much for giving us the gift
of faith so that we could believe in Jesus and be saved. Amen.
