Never hungry
Children's sermon
Object:
a pair of handcuffs
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled. (v. 6)
Good morning, boys and girls! Can you tell me what these are? (hold up handcuffs; allow answers) That's right: handcuffs! Who uses handcuffs? (allow answers each time) Right again -- policemen! Why do the police use handcuffs? Why do they need to lock up the bad guys? Good answers, all.
Today's Bible verse reminds me of a pair of handcuffs. The gospel reading for today is from a part of the Bible called the Beatitudes. This is a speech Jesus gave that encouraged people to be good servants of God. Verse 6 says: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." Now, I'm not hungry for handcuffs -- are you? (allow answers) Do you think that would taste very good? (allow answers) But this verse talks about people who want the good guys to come out on top. It's like an old Western movie, where the sheriff rides into town and locks up all the bandits and saves the day! Everybody wants a world without any bad guys!
But sometimes the bad guys get away. Maybe they didn't do anything really bad -- maybe they lied to their mothers or yelled at their dads. Maybe they stole their brother's baseball glove. Have you ever done anything like that? (allow answers) Most of us have at some point in our lives. We're not proud of the bad things we do -- we want to be good people, don't we? Do you want to be a good person? (allow answers) But sometimes we do things without thinking about it.
When Jesus talks about the people who hunger and thirst for righteousness, he's not just talking about us wanting the police to catch the crooks every time. Jesus means that sometimes we want ourselves to be better people. Have you ever wished you were nicer to your mom or your friends? Have you ever done something you felt bad about later? (allow answers) That's our hunger for righteousness. It doesn't feel very good, does it? (allow answers) Kind of like when you're hungry, right? Your stomach is kind of hollow and twisty? (allow answers) Well, you're in luck! "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness," Jesus says, "for they will be filled." When you get to heaven, Jesus is going to fill you up with righteousness. Not only will the bad guys not get away, but you will be able to do the right thing all the time. No more regrets! No more sins! You will feel the way you do after you eat a huge meal -- like you could never be hungry again. And that is one awesome promise. Amen.
