A Lost Boy Found!
Children's sermon
Object:
A box of chocolates (or substitute)
“he was lost and has been found.”
Good morning boys and girls,
I am so happy to see you this morning. How are you? (children may respond)
Let's play a game I call “Lost and Found.” Okay? (children respond)
(presenter role plays) Uh, oh, I lost something for today's message. Hmm, I wonder where it could be. It's a box like this. (shows approximate dimensions) (instruct the children to look around the immediate area) (then presenter or child finds it)
Ahh, here it is. That was fun. We lost something and then we found it.
Has it ever happened to you that you lost something and found it? (children respond)
I am going to talk to you today about a lost and found parable that Jesus told.
The Pharisees and Scribes grumbled about Jesus' behavior. They complained that Jesus welcomed sinners and even ate with them. So Jesus told this story:
There was this boy who got lost by rejecting his father and left home. He took his backpack, money, and fled to a far, far away country. While there in that far away country he did bad things. He ended up dirty, poor, and hungry. He was so hungry he was ready to eat the pods the pigs were eating. Then one day he realized how foolish he was. He headed for home, hoping his father (parents) would accept him. Did his father receive him? You bet he did. The loving father ran to him down the road, and welcomed him with open arms, an enormous hug, and many kisses. Then the father ordered a lavish banquet to celebrate his son who was lost and had been found.
God is like that. God welcomes lost sons and daughters who get lost. Since all of us have been lost and continue toget lost, Jesus finds us by his life and death on the cross for our sins. We are found by his love and sacrifice for us. Isn't that something to celebrate?
Let’s see what's in this box we found. Oh my goodness. It's a box of chocolates. (or substitute surprise for each child) Aren't you glad we found this box? Celebrate!
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, when we get lost please find us – even though we know you havwalready found us long ago in our baptism. Give us the Holy Spirit so we can sing and dance for joy. Amen.
