Children's sermon
Object:
a jar of honey
"But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these." (v. 8)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have heard of Winnie the Pooh? (allow answers) What do you know about Winnie the Pooh? (allow answers) He's a chubby, yellow bear who lives in a big woods and who really likes honey! Winnie the Pooh was created almost a hundred years ago by a man named A.A. Milne, and Winnie the Pooh and his friends are some of the most famous stuffed animals of all time!
Can you name Winnie the Pooh's friends? (allow answers) Good answers! Some of his friends are Piglet, Tigger, and Rabbit. Can anyone tell me where these animals live? (allow answers) They live in a big forest called the Hundred-Acre Woods. They each live in a little house, many of them built into the trees of the forest, and neither Pooh nor his friends have many possessions. Do you know what possessions are? (allow answers) Possessions are things that we own. Our possessions include our furniture, clothing, toys, books, and tools. Can you tell me what some of your possessions are? (allow answers) Wow! We all have a lot of possessions!
Can anyone tell me what Winnie the Pooh's favorite possession is? (allow answers) Pooh's favorite possession is a jar of honey. That's it! He is content with just a jar of honey -- like this one. (show honey jar) His friends also seem to be content in the Hundred-Acre Wood. They don't have a lot of things, but they have the food and clothing -- their own furry coats! -- that they need to be happy.
Our Bible verse talks about this kind of contentment. The verse says: "But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these." Is that always true for us? It isn't always true for me. Are you just not happy unless you have certain things? (allow answers) Maybe you aren't happy unless you have your favorite doll. Maybe a person is not happy unless he or she has their cell phone, blackberry, or internet connection. Sometimes we forget that we don't have to have the best gadgets or the best toys in order to feel happy. Winnie the Pooh is happy with just a jar of honey! Happiness is a choice. We can choose to be sad that we do not have all the things we might want, or we can choose to be happy that we have food, clothing, a safe place to sleep, and a God who loves us. Next time you are jealous of someone's toys or upset because your parents won't buy you something you want, think of Winnie the Pooh. He may not have much, but he chooses to be happy with what he has. We can make that choice, too. Amen.
