Learning to wait
Children's sermon
Object:
a calendar
Good morning! What do I have here? (Show the calendar and
let them answer.) Yes, this is a calendar, and I'm sure you have
several of these around your house. Now, today is Sunday,
December 5 (show the date on the calendar) and Christmas is on
December 25. Can somebody show me that date on the calendar? (Let
one of them point it out.) So that means that we have twenty days
to wait before Christmas is here. Does that seem like a long time
to wait? (Let them answer.)
If you're waiting for something really good like Christmas,
it does seem like it takes a long time to get here. It's hard to
be patient, but being impatient will not make it come any faster,
will it? (Let them answer.) No, it won't. Christmas is going to
be here on Saturday, December 25, and there is nothing we can do
to make it come faster.
There is something else that we are all waiting for too. We
are all waiting for Jesus to come back and take us all to be with
him in Heaven. He has promised he will do this, but he didn't
tell us when he would do it. He might do it today or sometime
between now and Christmas or he might wait another thousand
years. We don't know and there is no way for us to find out when
it will happen.
We do know, however, that he wants us to be patient while we
wait for him and to be ready when he comes. Being ready means
being a believer, being a person who believes that Jesus is our
Lord and Savior. Do all of you believe in Jesus? (Let them
answer.) Good! That means you are ready whenever he comes.
Let's ask Jesus to help us be patient.
Dear Jesus: Please help us learn to be patient while we wait for
Christmas and wait for your final return to take us all to
Heaven. Amen.
