Keeping or Giving
Children's sermon
Object:
Cardboard Love Box. (cardboard box is duct taped shut with hearts or treats inside)
“For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it.” (v. 35)
Good morning boys and girls,
How many smiling faces do I see this morning? If you held a mirror up to your face what would you see? A frumpy frown, a peculiar pout, a sassy sneer, or a Sunny Smile? Let's make today a Sunny Smiling Sunday. You're on camera. Everybody smile. Click.
I smile now when I get to talk to you about this “Love Box.” See what I made – a sturdy LoveBox. Inside are samples of love. Now we could just leave those love samples duct taped inside or we can tear the tape off and throw the love samples away. What shall we do? (children answer) Let's rip this box open and throw the love away, away, away! (tears open the box, throws valentines or treats out to the children even to adults in the congregation.)
That is easy but there are hard things to understand in life.
For example who can tell me how far away is the universe? Or who understands algebra? Or the difference between an adverb and an adjective? Or how does a watch work?
Not easy answers to tough questions.
In the Bible poor disciple Peter did not understand when Jesus told him something very hard. Jesus said he must go to Jerusalem to suffer and die there. Peter didn't get it.
“No, no Jesus,” he said. So Jesus corrected Peter and explained to him something hard to understand about what he just told him.
Jesus said if you keep something you will lose it but if you give something away you will keep it. That's hard to understand, but it is true, because that's what Jesus did with his life for you and for me.
Prayer: Thank you, dear Jesus for giving your life away so all people could be saved. Amen.
