A joyful noise
Children's sermon
Object:
simple musical instruments
Do you feel like making music this morning? I do! I would
like to read to you a Psalm. (Read a Psalm. Psalms 66, 95, 98,
and 100 are all appropriate. This is Psalm 98:4-8.)
"Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody. With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD. Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who live in it. Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy."
Now the Psalm says to make a "joyful noise" to the Lord. Sometimes we think that the only way we can sing our joy in the Lord is by piano or organ accompaniment. That is not true! We can find joy and can express it any way we please. I'm glad to be here this morning and I'm glad God is with us. I want us all to pick up an instrument and LET'S MAKE MUSIC! (You could have several adults participate -- especially if the children are shy or their number is small.)
When we are happy, our natural tendency is to sing -- or try to sing. We don't have to be professionals to sing. We can all make a "joyful noise."
We can be happy because we know that God is real and that God loves you and God loves me and God loves all of us. We can be happy because we know that God is with us this morning. We can be happy because today is the Lord's day. We can be happy because we have a caring congregation. Can you tell me more reasons why we can be happy this morning? (Let them answer.) These are all reasons for making music for our God. It may not be the kind of music you hear on the radio, but -- it's our joyful noise because we love God and God loves us!
Dearest Jesus: Bless the music we sing at church and make it a joyful noise because we're happy. Amen.
