Jesus heals
Children's sermon
Object:
a bottle of aspirin
Good morning! Have any of you ever had a bad headache or a
fever? (Let them answer.) Well, what did your mother or father
give you to heal you? (Let them answer.) Probably, they gave you
one of these. (Show the aspirin.) Aspirin is a great pill to take
away our pain or reduce fever.
When Jesus lived on the earth, they didn't have aspirin or
many of the other medicines that we have today. There were a lot
of sick people and people didn't live nearly as long as people
live today. As he moved around the country, Jesus did a lot of
healing. Once, when he was in the synagogue (that's the Jewish
church), he healed a crippled woman who had been crippled for
eighteen years. Do you think that woman was happy to be healed?
(Let them answer.) And do you think she was grateful that Jesus
did that for her? (Let them answer.) Yes, I'm sure she was.
Let me ask each of you a question today. Suppose you had an
awful disease that nobody could cure and this disease was going
to kill you unless you were healed. If Jesus healed you of that
terrible disease, would you be grateful? (Let them answer.)
Well, children, I want to tell you that this has already
happened. Each of us has a terrible disease that will kill us.
It's called sin! And the Bible tells us that the consequence of
sin is death ... and not just physical death, but eternal death!
But, when Jesus died on the cross, he paid the full price for our
sins. In other words, he healed us. Oh, we all continue to sin,
but we who believe that Jesus is our Savior have our sins
forgiven by God. So, you might say that we still have the
disease, but it won't kill us. Don't you think we should all be
happy and grateful to Jesus for saving us? (Let them answer.)
Yes, he is a lot better than an aspirin. Let's pray.
Dear Jesus: Thank you so much for healing us by your death on the
cross. We can never thank you enough for being our friend and our
Savior. Amen.
