Jesus Came to All
Children's sermon
Object:
a small manger scene
The Point: You are invited to the greatest moment in history ? Jesus’ birth
The Lesson: Merry Christmas, boys and girls. Thank you for sharing some of your Christmas celebration with me. I brought with me my favorite manger scene. In our Bible story Luke tells us that Jesus was born, wrapped in pieces of cloth, and laid in a manger. A manger is an animal feeding trough. That is why Jesus is often pictured being born in a stable. This is my stable with a few animals, Mary and Joseph, the manger, and of course the baby Jesus. That leaves these figures. (Don’t include the wise men in the scene) They are? (let the children answer) Right, shepherds. In many ways I believe the shepherds represent all of us. (show the manger scene pieces)
Luke tells us that an angel came to the shepherds to announce good news that a Savior has been born to all the world. Then a company of angels proclaimed, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
The greatest event in the whole world had just occurred, and God’s messengers went first to lowly shepherds. Not to kings or great scholars, not to church leaders or town mayors but to lowly shepherds. Wow, the news is clearly meant for everyone regardless of wealth or power, regardless of high or low standing, regardless of power or weakness, regardless of age or beauty or whether wise or dumb or short or tall. The good news of Jesus is that he comes to all of us, to every single person with a humble heart and life willing to accept him.
You see the shepherds represent us. If humble shepherds are invited to the manger where Jesus was born then certainly you are also invited. There is a place for you tonight with Mary and Joseph and shepherds and the animals at the birth place of Jesus.
Bring a humble heart and a life open to the amazing love of God and kneel at the manger. Jesus came to be born in your heart and to give you life, forever and ever. That is the Christmas good news: Merry Christmas.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Happy Birthday Jesus! What joy fills our lives as we again hear the angels proclaim the wonder of your birth. As we celebrate your birth, Jesus, come into our lives we pray. May your light shine forth from us in all that we say and do. Lord Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
