Jesus is the Bread of Eternal Life
Children's sermon
Object:
A Loaf of Bread and a Bible
The Point: Bread is important for daily life, but Jesus alone is the bread that gives eternal life.
The Lesson: Girls and boys, thank you for coming forward to share this time with me.
I brought two items with me today. The first is a loaf of bread. It is a really great bread. My husband made it, and he truly makes good bread. Bread stands for the food that we need in order to live each day. Food gives our bodies the nutrients that are needed to grow and to build strong bones. Of course, it is important to eat the right foods so that we will grow to be healthy and strong.
I also brought with me a Bible. It also contains what we need to grow to be healthy and strong in our faith. The Bible tells us all about God and his love for you. In fact, God loves you so much that he sent his only Son Jesus to you. Jesus came not to judge you or condemn you when you sin. No, Jesus came to tell us about God's love and to be God's love to all people.
In our reading from John today, Jesus said that he is the Bread of Life. We eat this bread (hold the loaf of bread up) in order to satisfy our hunger and to sustain our physical life. But Jesus alone can satisfy our spiritual hunger. Jesus, the Bread of Life, alone can sustain our spiritual life. Without a relationship with Jesus we will starve and not have eternal life. Just as you must eat this bread for it to feed your body, so you must every day ask Jesus into your heart so that he might feed your faith and your spiritual life.
Eat healthy and your physical life will be strengthened. Read about Jesus daily and invite him into your daily walk, and he will sustain your spiritual life forever.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, thank you for all the gifts at our tables. The food that gives us nourishment and all those who prepared it and provided it. Thank you Jesus for being our Bread of Life. Come into each of our hearts to feed us with your heavenly grace. Jesus, as we walk with you daily, may we find in you the spiritual nourishment we need. Jesus, in your name we pray. Amen.
