hands (your hands and the hands of the children)
Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy
Spirit. (v. 17)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about our human tools. Did you know that you had tools that were part of your body? (let them answer) Would you show me your body tools? (let them show you) Your nose is a tool used to smell and your ears are tools used to listen. Some people call their teeth tools because they help to chew food. Of course you have a tongue that is the tool of talk. But I am thinking of a different kind of tool, one that is more like the tools your father keeps in his toolbox. The body tools that I am talking about are our hands. These are great tools. We can hold things in them, twist things off with our hands, and hold onto branches so we can climb trees. We even use our hands when we play musical instruments. We use our hands in a lot of ways.
Because our hands are so important, God has chosen to encourage us to use our hands when we are giving a blessing. Do you know what a blessing is? (let them answer) A blessing is when one person puts their hand or hands on the head of another person and speaks of the love of God to bring happiness or goodness to the person.
The story in the Bible that we are talking about is a story that was told about two disciples, Peter and John. One day, they were hanging out in Jerusalem when they received the word that many people in Samaria had accepted the teachings of Jesus. When Peter and John heard the news, they walked as fast as they could to a place called Samaria. When they arrived, the people who had accepted Jesus in baptism were very excited. People were jumping up and down everywhere because they were so excited about being baptized. Then Peter took one of them aside and John did the same. They had them kneel on the ground and then they held the people's heads in their hands and began to pray for the Holy Spirit to enter into their hearts. One person after another came to John and Peter and asked that they may be blessed, also. The people now grew quieter because they felt different. The people felt the Spirit of God go through their bodies as Peter and John blessed them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
When you were a baby, I may have held you in my arms and baptized you in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. I put my hands on your head after the water had flowed across your head and I blessed you. Actually, it was my hands on your head, but the Spirit of God came to you with the blessing God gave me to strengthen you.
The next time you use your hands as a tool, I want you to think about how God is going to use your two hands. Amen.
