Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. (v. 20)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Are any of you visiting for the first time this morning? (allow answers) Welcome! For those of you who come to this church a lot, how many of you have been to another church before? (allow answers) How did it feel to go to another church? (allow answers) Have any of you ever been to a place of worship that is not a church? Maybe a synagogue, a mosque, or a temple? (allow answers) Is there always a cross in different worship places? (show cross; allow answers) If you have ever been to one of these places, how was it different from a church? (allow answers)
Every place of worship is different. Some places of worship are very different from each other -- for example, a temple in India or Japan is very different from a Catholic cathedral -- and some places are very similar -- maybe two different churches in the same town -- but still have things that set them apart. Can any of you tell me which place is the best place to praise God? (allow answers)
The answer is... All of them! There is no one place that is better than any other place to pray and honor God. Our Bible verse today talks about Jesus and a woman who is a Samaritan. In Jesus' time, Samaritan people were looked down on by the Jews. Although the Samaritans were followers of Abraham, one of the reasons they were different from the Jews was because they thought that different places were holy. The Jews thought that Jerusalem was the holiest place of worship. Samaritans thought that a certain mountain was the holiest place of worship.
Even though most Jews wouldn't even talk to Samaritans, Jesus surprised everyone by being friendly to Samaritans. And do you know what Jesus said? He told the Samaritans something that we already know: that there is no "best" place of worship. If your heart is in the right place praising God, anywhere you are is holy. Amen.
