God's family
Children's sermon
Object:
baby pictures
Babies are so cute. Do you all like babies? (Let them
answer.) Look at the baby pictures I brought with me this
morning. Wouldn't you agree these babies are cute? (Let them
answer.) I don't think I've ever seen a little baby that wasn't
cute in his or her own way. That's the way God has made babies.
When a baby is born he or she becomes a part of a very special group. It's a group that is called a "family." Every family is different. Some are adoptive families. This means that the family "adopts" a baby because the family sees something special about him or her. The family has chosen this person to be their child. Some are birth families. A birth family is one where the child is born into that family. Some are single-parent families. A single-parent family perhaps has either a father or a mother, but not both. Some families have both a mother and a father. The point is that every family is important to a baby. Could a baby live without a family? (Let them answer.) What do families give babies? (Let them answer.) A baby's family gives him or her food, clothing, and a house to live in. Families are also supposed to give each child love and care.
When we become members of a church, we join another family - - the church family. Indeed we are all called "children of God" because we belong to God. That is how God shows love for us. God calls us "children." We are part of God's own family!
Every one of our families is important. Belonging to God's family and being known as God's child is especially important. That is how God shows love for us. God not only takes care of providing us with air to breath and water to drink and food to eat, God also gives us that special ingredient of love.
Dearest God: Thank you for showing your love for us by calling us your children. Amen.
