For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (v. 6)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have given something of yours away to someone who needed it? (allow answers) Sometimes we give away canned food or used clothing to help those who need them. Sometimes we also give away our money in order to help others.
The people who receive the things we give away can come from many different situations. Maybe it is someone who recently lost a job or was in the hospital and now can't pay all of their bills or has a lot of debt. Maybe it is someone whose job doesn't pay very well, but they have a lot of children to take care of. Maybe it is someone who has been injured or unable to work for a while. Usually we think of people like this as people who deserve the things we give away.
But sometimes the people who receive the things we give away are people who we don't like to think about. Maybe they have problems with drugs or alcohol. Maybe they don't have a job because they don't like to go to work, or because they steal or cheat. Maybe they have been in jail.
We don't like to think about people like that. We don't like to give things to people who we think don't deserve them. But that's not how we should give. God set an example for us by sending his Son to save us when we were sinners. In God's eyes, we were the same as the greedy, dirty, lazy people we don't want to give things to. We were sinners! We didn't do the things we were supposed to do! We weren't good enough for God. But God ignored all of that and sent his Son -- his own precious Son -- to die for our sins. Through Jesus' death, we became clean. We became upstanding, hardworking, pure people. Because Jesus died, we can accept God's love. And we are saved.
Next time you see someone in need, no matter how dirty or mean they seem, remember God's love. Like God, we should see past the sin and shame and share what we have with others. Amen.
