Breakfast with Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
some charcoal
When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it and
bread. (v. 9)
Good morning, boys and girls. Christ is risen! (repeat two times while the children respond, "Christ is risen indeed!") Our memories are getting better and we are telling the world that we believe in Jesus. What a great way to start the day. You could do this every morning when you get up. Tell your mom and dad, "Christ is risen!" They will respond to you, "Christ is risen indeed." It will be part of your morning devotions.
Today we are going to talk about one of my favorite stories in the Bible. Remember that Jesus is alive, resurrected from the dead, and that he has met with some or all of the disciples two different times. The Bible tells us about a third time when seven of the disciples were up early in the morning. They were fishing, but after several hours they caught no fish. Then they saw a person on shore asking them if they had caught any fish. They replied, "No." The person on the beach told them that they should fish on the other side of their boat. They tried it, and when they did, the fish were so many that they thought they would not be able to lift them in the boat. These were strong men and it is a good thing they were really strong this day to get all of the fish and the net back into the boat.
They knew then that the person giving them directions was Jesus. As soon as Peter helped get the fish in the boat, he jumped out of the boat and swam to shore. He was so glad to see Jesus again. Pretty soon the other disciples brought the boat and fish to the shore.
As they walked toward Jesus, they saw something burning. I brought some of that with me today. (show them the charcoal) It may have been a little different then, but what do we call this material that I brought with me? (let them answer) That's right, it is charcoal. What do we do with charcoal? (let them answer) That's right, again. We burn it and after it is very hot, what do we do with it? (let them answer) Very good, we cook hamburgers, hot dogs, or chicken, and sometimes fish.
Fish and bread were already cooking on the charcoal fire. Jesus was cooking for the disciples while they were out in the boat. How many of you like warm bread? (let them answer) I love warm bread. Jesus also charbroiled some fish and they all enjoyed breakfast together. It was a great morning and they loved being with Jesus and sharing his life again. There were other things that happened that morning but I will always remember the cookout.
The next time you are around a charcoal fire making hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, or fish, I hope you will remember the day that the resurrected Jesus came to share breakfast with seven of his disciples. Amen.
