Believing the promise
Children's sermon
Object:
an advertisement for a coming event (perhaps a concert or play)
Good morning! Here is an ad for ______________ that is
coming up. According to this ad, the event will take place on
_________________ at _________. Now, do you believe this ad is
right? Will that event really take place at that place and time?
(Let them answer.) It probably will, but we can't be absolutely
sure, can we? A lot of things could happen that would prevent it.
For instance, the star might get sick or the building might burn
down. There are lots of things that might happen. Nothing that we
human beings plan can ever be absolutely certain.
However, when God plans for something to happen, can anything
prevent it from happening? (Let them answer.) No, nothing can
stop God's plans from happening. God planned for Jesus to be born
into the world and he was. He came exactly as God planned for him
to come. Isn't that what we will be celebrating tomorrow? (Let
them answer.) Yes, of course it is. God told Mary that she would
be the mother of Jesus and she believed Him. She went to see her
relative, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth said to her, "Blessed is she
who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken
to her by the Lord." Was Elizabeth right? Did Mary believe that
God would do what He promised? (Let them answer.) Yes, she surely
did. How about us? Will we be blessed if we believe God will keep
His promises? (Let them answer.) Yes, we will. Tomorrow is
Christmas, the day we celebrate God keeping His promise to send
us a Savior. Let's say a prayer now thanking God for keeping His
promise.
Dear God: We thank You for keeping all Your promises, and
especially for sending Jesus to us when he was born in Bethlehem.
Help us remember the reason for our celebration of Christmas
tomorrow. Amen.
