Angel
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas tree angel
But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." (v. 20)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Who can tell me what holiday is coming up? (allow answers) That's right -- Christmas! What have you been doing to prepare for Christmas, either at home or here at church? (allow answers) You've probably been doing a lot of decorating! What are some things you have done to decorate for Christmas? (allow answers) Your parents have probably been doing a lot of shopping for gifts and baking things like Christmas cookies or fruitcake. Have you helped them shop or bake? (allow answers) There is a lot of work that we do to prepare for Christmas! It is a major holiday in our country and for our faith.
Today I brought something that I use to decorate for Christmas. (show angel) How many of you have an angel like this to put on top of the Christmas tree? (allow answers) Do you ever fight with your brothers and sisters about who gets to put the angel on the top of the tree? (allow answers) Putting the angel on the top of the tree is like putting the finishing touches on a beautiful painting. The angel sits at the very top, as close to heaven as it can be.
We don't just put an angel at the top of the tree because it looks pretty. Angels play an important part in the Christmas story! Can any of you tell me about angels in the Christmas story? When do angels show up in the story of Jesus' birth? (allow answers)
The song "Angels We Have Heard on High" talks about what are probably the most famous angels in the Christmas story -- the angels who appear to the shepherds and tell them where to find baby Jesus. But angels are in the Christmas story much earlier than that! They are there from the very beginning, when Mary finds out that she will be the mother of God's Son. The angel Gabriel comes to tell Mary the news. Later, an angel comes to Joseph, the man Mary is engaged to be married to and tells Joseph that he should marry Mary. Joseph isn't sure about that -- after all, Mary is going to have a baby and she is not married! But Joseph knows better than to go against what an angel says. And thanks to that angel, Jesus was born into a family of two loving parents: Mary and Joseph. Later, an angel comes to Joseph again and tells him to take his family to Egypt to escape King Herod, who wants to kill the baby Jesus.
So in the Christmas story, angels do more than just sing. Angels bring scary news -- the news to Mary that she would be the mother of God. They bring instructions -- telling Joseph to marry Mary honorably. They bring warnings -- telling Mary and Joseph to escape an angry King Herod. And yes -- they bring good news of great joy. In a few days, we will celebrate those good tidings. Gloria! Amen.
