Alpha and omega
Children's sermon
Object:
a book, a seed, and a flower
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and
who is to come, the Almighty. (v. 8)
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you remember last week when we praised God by saying something out loud? (let them answer) Let's see if we can do it again. (say "Christ is risen" three times and have them respond, "Christ is risen indeed!" three times) Very good, this is something we want to say over and over again so that the world knows what we believe. Every time we say the words, we build our confidence and our faith.
We have a very famous saying in the book of Revelation. The writer, John, remembered Jesus telling the followers that he was the "Alpha and the Omega." Does anyone know what Alpha and Omega are and how they are used? (let them answer) This is a difficult question because we don't use the words "Alpha and Omega," but today you are going to learn words from another language. It is the Greek language and "Alpha" is the first letter in the Greek alphabet and "Omega" is the last letter in the Greek alphabet. When Jesus said, "I am the Alpha and the Omega," he was saying he was the beginning and the end. Everything begins with Jesus and everything ends with Jesus.
There is a lot in between and we are part of the between. Jesus was not only present in the beginning but he is with us now. Jesus is not only the ending but he is with us now.
Let's take a look at a book. (show them the book) A book has a beginning. It begins with the first page and it ends with the last page. There are a lot of words in between the first page and the last page. That is where we are when we are reading the book.
Let's look at something else. I brought along a seed. (show them the seed) It is the beginning of a wonderful life. We plant the seed in the ground and it has a beginning. In a couple of weeks or months, we will have this beautiful flower. But there will be a lot of growing in between the time we put the seed in the ground and when we smell the flower. (let them smell the flower) That is where we are with Jesus. Jesus was involved in the beginning of life and the entire world. Jesus will be there after we die, but in between we are with him every day and he is teaching us how to live and be disciples of the church.
The next time you hear about Alpha and Omega you will think that this is part of the Greek alphabet. It is the first letter and the last letter. There are a lot of other letters in between. The same is true with us. We were born and we will die, but in between there is a lot of living and Jesus is with us every day of our lives. Amen.
