Accountability
Children's sermon
Object:
a list of things to do around the house
Good morning! I'd like to ask you this morning about the
kinds of work you do around your house. Do your parents have
certain jobs that they expect you to do on a regular basis? (Let
them answer.) Let's suppose that your parents gave you a list
like this of things they wanted you to do around the house
tomorrow. (Show the list.) At the end of the day, they would look
around and see if you had done all that they had asked you to do.
If you had not done the work, there would probably be some
consequences, that is, something bad might happen to you because
you had failed to do what they expected you to do. We have a word
we use to describe this situation when somebody is responsible
for getting something done. The word is "accountability." In this
situation, we would say that you were accountable to your parents
for getting that work done.
The Bible tells us that we are all "accountable" to God. He
has a lot of things He wants us to do here on earth. What kinds
of things does God want us to do? (Let them answer.) Yes, He
certainly wants us to do all that, but there is one thing that we
are accountable for that is most important. It is so important
that, if we don't do it, God won't let us into Heaven! What do
you think that might be? (Let them answer.)
God holds us all accountable for believing in His Son, our
Lord, Jesus Christ. Through faith, He gives us the power to
believe, and if we don't do it, if we reject Jesus, He will hold
us accountable and will not let us into Heaven. Do any of you
want that to happen to you? (Let them answer.) No, of course not.
We all want to go to Heaven. Now let me ask you, do you believe
in Jesus as your Friend and Savior? (Let them answer.) That's
good! And because you believe, I know you are all trying to do
the things God wants you to do. Let's thank God for giving us
faith so that we can believe in Jesus and go to Heaven.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You so much for giving us the
gift of faith so that we can believe in Jesus and do the things
that You want us to do. Amen.
