Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
God of glory, it's easy to see your glory in resurrection, but not so easy to see it in darkness and suffering and pain. Where was your glory when Jesus prayed for relief from his approaching ordeal? And where was your glory when he hung on the cross, feeling deserted by you? God of glory, open my eyes that I may see you especially when I'm overwhelmed by my own darkness and suffering and pain. And give me the strength to endure, knowing that whatever happens, you're on my side and will lead me through the darkness to resurrection.

God of glory, sometimes your Church is resplendent and glorious. The colour and the drama and the worship all work together to uplift the soul and bring us nearer to you. But sometimes your Church seems remote and forbidding, and human beings feel rejected. God of glory, give your Church strength to endure the difficult times, and sensitivity towards your people, so that your glory may always be seen within your Church. Today we pray with Christians throughout the world for the church and people of the Sudan, and we remember the great contribution to Christianity made by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran Pastor who was martyred in 1945.

God of justice, when we see the glaring injustices in our world, it sometimes feels as though your glory has been snuffed out by the darkness of evil. Protect the leaders of the nations from insidious corruption, that they may always seek sensitively for the good of the people. And may the spark of your glory be ever visible in our world. We pray for all who are suffering as a result of armed violence, and for the families and friends of those who have been injured or killed because of armed conflict.

God of compassion, when our friends and families look at us, they see your Church. Keep us close to you so that your glory may shine in our lives, and people may be drawn to you. During this present difficult time, be very close to the families and friends of those who serve in the Armed Forces and strengthen and support families who live in Iraq and the Middle East.

God of the future, we bring into your presence those of our friends and families who are sick. We pray for their healing, whatever form that might take. Be especially close to those who have been damaged because of man's inhumanity to man. Lay your healing hands upon all these people, so that their darkness may be illuminated by your glory. We name them in our own hearts...

God of love, some of our friends feel hurt and bereft because someone they love has died, either recently, or in previous years at this time. May they feel your arms around them, giving them the strength and support and love they need and revealing your glory even in their desperate darkness. Especially we remember the family of ...., and those for whom this time of year brings a sad anniversary....

We ask these prayers through Jesus, who endured for our sakes, so that resurrection would be an option for all human beings.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
