Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Gentle and self-effacing God, I'm in danger of not noticing you, for you hide yourself away in the timid and the quiet, the poor and the weak. It's not that I deliberately ignore you, God. If I spotted you, I'd be there in an instant.
Oh, I see! That's the problem, isn't it? I just don't notice, because I'm not very well tuned in to you. If my heart was overflowing with love, I wouldn't even have to think, I'd just help instinctively. And I wouldn't be aware I'd done anything, for it would be second nature to me.
Oh God! I've got such a long way to go! Help me to so open my heart that it can be filled by you. That's all I need.

Gentle God, your Church is just as obsessed with money as everyone else. We can't survive without money, and as our worshippers decrease, so the money problem becomes ever more urgent and ever more obsessive. Gentle God, help your Church to put money in its proper place, and to celebrate the invaluable riches you constantly give us. With Christians world-wide we pray especially today for your Church in Nigeria with Archbishop Joseph Adetiloye and your Church in Newcastle (UK) with Bishop Martin Wharton.

Gentle God, the world only appreciates one sort of kingship, the kingship of earthly power and wealth. May our world leaders begin to realise that there is another way; that your way of gentleness and love and forgiveness is far more powerful and more effective in the end than any amount of force. Help our leaders to grow closer together, thinking of all human beings rather than just their own country as they make their decisions. We pray especially today for...

Gentle God, we pray for tolerance and understanding of all those in our community. May we learn to face our differences and work through them, and may we be generous in our dealings with one another. Gentle God, we pray for the dying and those who face the agony of watching and waiting as their loved ones leave this world. May they be aware of your strength and comfort. Give peace to those who are bereaved and enable them to feel your love as it pours into them. We remember too, all those for whom this time of year is a difficult anniversary. We name them before you ...
