Generous God...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Generous God, you are always so much more willing to give and to forgive than I deserve. Help me to realise that your huge generosity knows no bounds, that your mercy and forgiveness are always present. And generous God, help me to remember your goodness in my dealings with others. Keep me from being like that other steward, the unjust one who received so much from his master but refused to handle his own minions with a generous spirit.
Generous God, in troubled times like these, help your Church to stand firm to Christian principles. May your Church speak clearly and firmly but generously, as we seek to help lead and guide your people. May we resist calls for vengeance, but remain true to the principles of justice and the eradication of evil. And above all, may we remain in close contact with you, our Lord and Master.
Today we pray especially for Venezuela and Bishop Orlando Guerrero, and Agder in the Church of Norway, with Bishop Olav Skjevesland.
Generous God, we pray as we've never prayed before for our world leaders. As we hold them in your presence, pour your love into them and over them and through them. Grant our leaders wisdom and patience, that they may make decisions which are right for the whole world. Channel their grief and their anger, that their reactions may not exacerbate the situation but may bring good and so destroy evil. We pray especially for President Bush and America's leaders, and for Tony Blair and our own leaders.
Generous God, today we continue to pray for the people of America, especially for the people of New York and Washington. We pray too for all British families who have lost someone they love, and hold in your love all those who still don't know exactly what has happened to their loved ones. We continue to pray for all those involved in the clearing up operation, and ask you to give them the strength and endurance they need.
Generous God, we hold in your presence today all those who are sick. As we name them in our own hearts before you, touch them with your healing power and enable them to recover their full health and strength. We pray especially for ....
Generous God, we remember before you all who have died recently, both those we know and those many thousands who are unknown to us but for whom we grieve. We pray for those struggling to come to terms with such cruel loss, and ask that they may be aware of your love and your strength as they face their bereavement. We name especially before you ....
We ask these prayers through our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
