Forgiving God, It's Not Fair...
Intercession

The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Forgiving God, it's not fair. Why should I forgive someone who's done awful things to me? They don't deserve forgiveness - they ought to be locked up and the key thrown away. It's not as if I've done anything wrong. Forgiving God, I feel such rage and anger and hatred against the one who hurts me. I want to hurt back - it's only fair. Yet I'm also aware that if I nourish my rage and hatred, I'm the one who gets hurt by it. Forgiving God, I can't forgive all by myself. I'm incapable of that depth of forgiveness. Lord, please help me. Give me your gift of forgiveness, that my soul may remain healthy and that I live to love and to understand.

Forgiving God, you are so central to our lives and our being that we feel extremely deeply about you. This means that anyone who questions our religion or our way of relating to you touches a very deep nerve indeed, and can hurt us badly. Lord, help us to set aside personal hurt and to suspend judgment on those who think and worship differently. May all Christian Churches pull together, living with their differences, so that all may absorb your love and flourish within it.
With all Christians we pray especially today for your Church in Gombe (Nigeria) with Bishop Henry Ndukuba and your Church in Hamaar (Norway) with Bishop Rosemarie Kohn.

Forgiving God, we continue to pray for wisdom for all world leaders. May they open their hearts to you in whatever way they relate to you. May they meet in a spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness, and may they all consider each other's needs.

Forgiving God, lack of forgiveness within our small community can be like poison which gradually spreads. Help us to start with ourselves, forgiving ourselves and our family members for every hurt which we or they have inflicted. And then help us to forgive any in the wider community who have injured us, whether deliberately or unknowingly. May we so experience your forgiving love that our egos become unimportant and we're able to love each other in Christian humility. Be especially close to those who feel unable to forgive, and help that hard rock inside them to melt, so that they too might experience your love in all its warmth and splendour.
In our own community we pray especially today ...

Forgiving God, support, strengthen and sustain all who are sick. May any who carry a heavy burden of guilt know that they are forgiven, and learn to forgive themselves. Restore them all to full health and strength, and touch those whom we name (in our own hearts) with your healing power ...
Forgiving God, may any who carry a heavy burden of guilt know that they are forgiven. Touch all who are sick and especially those whom we name (in our own hearts) with your healing power ...
Forgiving God, we pray for all who have lost someone they love. Especially today we pray for those who have been bereaved very suddenly or through some kind of accident or violence. Heal their wounds and bind up their broken hearts, that they may go forward in your love. We hold in your presence today .... and those who continue to remember and mourn at this time of year ...

We ask these prayers through the one who forgave even those who nailed him to a cross - Jesus Christ our Lord.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
