Lectionary Tales For The Pulpit
Series III, Cycle C
"Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he." So the nursery song goes. Zacchaeus was wee in stature but large in audacity.
Zacchaeus was an interesting man. His name means "pure," yet the Bible tells us he was anything but. He was a chief tax collector in Jericho, the city where the walls had fallen down. It was a small town on a trade route. Jesus was passing through it on his way to Jerusalem. Zacchaeus was hated by the Jews not only because he was a tax collector but also because he had contact with Gentiles.
